Area and Boundaries

Rombo District Council is among the six (6) Councils and one (1) Municipality that make up the Kilimanjaro Region which are; Hai, Same, Mwanga, Moshi, Siha and Moshi Municipality. This district was established in 1972.

The area of ​​the District is 1,442 square kilometers equal to 144,000 hectares. The district borders the country of Kenya to the North and East. In the South and South-West it is bordered by Moshi District, in the North-West it is bordered by Siha and Longido Districts located in Arusha Region.

Land Use

44,114 hectares are suitable for agriculture, 57 hectares are suitable for breeding, 38,194 hectares are natural and planted forests and 16,492 hectares are suitable for livestock pastures, 45,143 hectares are water areas, mountains and rocks.

Administration

Administratively, the District is divided into 5 Divisions, 27 Wards, 68 Villages and 296 Townships. In addition, one Ward of Kelamfua Mokala has become the Authority of the Chief's Small Town with a total of 15 Streets. The District has one Constituency.

 

Weather

The district has an autumn rainy season that starts in October and ends in December and monsoons from March to May and a summer season that starts in June and ends in October. The average annual rainfall is 1000 mm and the average temperature is 220C.

The district is divided into 3 zones which are:-

Upper Zone with volcanic soil
The Middle Zone has a mixture of slightly clayey and loamy soil
The Lower Zone has a mixed soil of clay and sand with a small amount of loam.
 Population

The number of people according to the National Population and Housing Census in 2012, the District has 260,963 people, 124,528 men and 136,435 women and an average of 4 people per household. In addition, the analysis of various Census information including the increase in population per year is done by the National Statistics Office.

 Economic Activities

90 percent of the residents of Rombo District are engaged in agriculture and livestock, 7 percent are businessmen/entrepreneurs and 3 percent are employees in various public and private sectors. The per capita income for Rombo District is Tshs 850,000/= per year according to the population and housing census of 2012.
